Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Tightens Grip on OTT Platforms
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has blocked five OTT platforms, including MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, and Digi Movieplex, for streaming obscene content. Feel and Jugnu are also on the list released to the press. Officials said the action followed multiple public grievances and was carried out under due procedure as per the IT Act and IT Rules, 2021.
Action Taken Under IT Rules 2021
Government sources cited by PTI reported that the platforms operated content that breached established public decency standards. The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021 provide authorities with the power to order internet service providers to shut down access to all illegal online content. The rules protect national security interests while they maintain proper ethical standards for online media platforms.
Earlier Crackdown on 25 Platforms
This move follows a larger crackdown in July 2025, when 25 OTT Platforms were blocked for allegedly streaming obscene and pornographic material, according to ANI. Ullu, ALTT, Big Shots App, NeonX VIP, and Desiflix were among those named.
In September 2024, these platforms had received prior warnings, and an advisory was issued again in February 2025, urging them to comply.
Allegations of Repeated Violations
MIB sources told ANI that much of the flagged content involved “graphic sexual innuendos, long sequences of nudity and pornographic visuals,” adding that “there was hardly any storyline, theme, or message in a social context.”
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights had earlier flagged Ullu and ALTT for alleged violations in 2024.
What This Means for India’s Digital Streaming Space
The latest action signals stricter monitoring of OTT Platforms in India. Compared to previous warnings, the government appears more willing to enforce direct blocks. The development highlights rising scrutiny around digital content standards.
The platforms that have recently faced blockages have not issued any official response yet, so the upcoming months are expected to see more intense discussions between creative freedom and regulatory issues.
