Adobe Study Warns of Serious Risk to Election Integrity in India

According to Adobe's "Future of Trust Study for India," about 81 percent of Indians believe that the content they see online has been altered in some way and have trouble verifying information. Election integrity is increasingly at risk due to the proliferation of sophisticated deepfake technology.

Today, Adobe released a report titled ‘Future of Trust Study for India,’ which discusses misinformation and the impact of AI-created measures on Indian elections. The company says it surveyed more than 2,000 Indians with the aim of “understanding public perceptions and sentiments about the social impact of AI enablement. Ensuring election integrity is crucial to maintaining public trust in the democratic process.

Says Pratibha Mohapatra, Vice President and Managing Director of Adobe India: “With the current election, now is the time to embrace content certification and other protective technologies to restore trust in digital creation in the living system.”

Nearly 45 percent of Indians also say they have stopped or reduced their use of specific social media platforms due to the misinformation spread on them.

While 93 percent of respondents say they want to know if brands were built with Artificial Intelligence, such respondents say they need tools to help them determine the legitimacy of their sources. Efforts to safeguard election integrity must include robust measures to detect and counteract deepfake content.

Conclusion:
As India approaches its next election integrity, the findings of the Adobe study highlight a critical growing threat to the country’s democratic integrity: deepfake. These AI-generated websites pose a severe threat by spreading misinformation, undermining public trust, and potentially damaging political campaigns.
