Polymeric Technology produces a high-quality oil-free polyester resin, alkyd, and modified alkyd resin, and all acrylic solution resin, including hydroxyl functional, thermoset, and thermoplastic resin. A Pragmatic Leader
Dr. Teo Kim Teck is the Founder and Managing Director of Polymeric Technology Sdn Bhd, having almost 30 years of experience in the coating industry. After pursuing his Basic Degree in Science, major in Chemistry from the University of Malaya in Malaysia, Teo started his career with Nippon Paint Malaysia as a chemist, after which he joined the British company, Croda Resin, as the techno-commercial manager holding responsibilities across the Asia -Pacific region.
Teo was then appointed as the General Manager in the manufacturing unit of the UK- based Globe Leigh's Paint in Malaysia, which specializes in Protective & Marine coating. He says that while working as a chemist at Nippon, he received technical knowledge about paint applications, including the limitations of coating formulation, which planted the seed of innovation for the future. Driven with the motive and desire to overcome the limitation in paint formulation technology, Teo started researching raw materials, which led him to do doctorate-level research and obtained his PhD in polymer chemistry from University Malaya in Malaysia.
He understood the marketing network formation and the management concept through his experience in the commercial front of raw material. Working as the General Manager in Globe Leigh's paint further enhanced his management skills.
Teo works as the technical lead, supported by 15 technical staff for resin technology development.He also plays an important marketing role by establishing Polymeric Technology's marketing and distribution network throughout Asia.
Challenges and Achievements
Teo highlighted that the main challenges are to establish our own brand in this well established and dynamic chemical industry. To be one of the key players, the company should provide the industry with strong polymer technology development, and not just having ability to produce a common resin as many other can do in the industry. This is because, it is in everyone’s best interest to leverage new technology and infrastructure growth to directly address ongoing needs for greater balance between performance, cost, sustainability and quality which is our main promise to the industry. Teo also shares that getting more human assets particularly in technical team is another challenge for a new company focusing on technology development.

He believes that a good team requires performance-driven heavy brainstorming, leading to strong momentum and promising outcome for any innovation.

According to Teo, disruptive technologies have influenced routine work conditions. In polymer innovation, big data and artificial intelligence such as computer simulation providescrucial data analysis, which shortens the product innovation process and increases the success rate of product innovation target. He says that as an innovation leader, using disruptive technologies, particularly big data, ensures the companyis in the right direction towards innovation.
Moving Towards the Technological-driven Future
Teo states that the significant changes in the global chemical industry have created many super gigantic chemical companies such as DowDupont, BASF, Covestro, and AkzoNobel. As the product range and technology have merged, the market is shifting towards sustainable mass production. He observes that this has created the possibility for the medium and small manufacturers to participate in product modification as per the market needs.

He reckons that with the latest technology, such as 3D printing, the industry will move towards the creation of newer functional polymers.
