Report Reveals Data Mishandling Impedes AI Integration in Businesses
Organizations around the world recognize the importance of managing data to make AI more effective, but still exhibit low levels of data maturity, according to a recent survey by Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE).
According to the report, only 7 percent of organizations can perform real-time data push-pulls to enable new AI products and external data currency, while only 26 percent have a data governance framework established and capable of detailed analysis.
More concerning is that fewer than 6 in 10 respondents said their organization is fully capable of handling any of the basic elements of storing data for use in AI models -- access, storage, processing, and retrieval.
The report said Wednesday: “This discrepancy not only risks slowing down the AI prototype-building process but raises the possibility that the prototypes will yield the wrong insights and negative return on investment (ROI).
The report also found that organizations fail to understand the AI lifecycle audit and end-to-end communication requirements, with less than half of IT leaders admitting they understand what AI projects require in terms of training, tuning, and inferencing.
The report states that despite the important role compliance plays in artificial intelligence industry-related activities, 22 percent of IT leaders do not include legal teams at all in their business’ AI strategy discussions.
“These findings clearly demonstrate the appetite for AI, but they also highlight a real blind spot that can see growth stalled if a holistic approach is not followed,” said Sylvia Hooks, vice president of HPE Aruba Networking.
He added: “For example, irregularities in policy and departmental involvement can prevent organizations from applying vital knowledge, making effective and efficient decisions, ensuring that they have all the direction of AI and are consistently using all aspects of the project.”
Conclusion: The report highlights the critical importance of effective data governance in facilitating AI integration and its significant benefits for businesses. By taking a proactive approach to data governance that addresses data misuse issues, organizations can remove barriers to AI adoption and drive innovation and growth in the digital age.
