In a shocking turn of events, China’s largest and most successful automaker BYD has announced the recall of nearly 97,000 of its top-selling electric vehicles. The reason behind it is potentially hazardous manufacturing faults.

As per a statement released by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the recalled cars include top-selling models like BYD Dolphin or Yuan Plus EV. The BYD Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs that have been called back have been manufactured between November 2022 and December 2023.

The recall action has been justified as a precaution due to a defect in the steering control unit, which could increase the risk of fire. Citing the nature of the steering issue, BYD has swiftly acted on this matter. However, the SAMR hasn’t given a detailed report on what the potential fire hazards may BYD EV entail.

Considering this issue, BYD will be asking its dealers to implement a physical fix to resolve the issue. No immediate injuries or accidents linked to the defect have been reported as of the announcement.

The recall for both, BYD Dolphin and Yuan Plus EV will dampen BYD’s rise as the top automaker in China as these two models are best-selling EVs in China. Both vehicles are known for their competitive pricing, strong market presence and innovative technology causing a setback for BYD.

In 2023 alone, the two models accounted for 26% of the company’s total sales, which amounted to over 3 million vehicles, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

The move and safety hazard warnings come as a significant problem as BYD has grown exponentially in recent years, surpassing major EV giants like Tesla and other traditional carmakers. While BYD’s growth has been exponential outweighing all other automakers in sheer volume, this call-back will cause a major setback.

This incident represents one of the few significant recalls the company has made in the EV sector, aside from a smaller recall in 2022 of Tang plug-in hybrid models due to a defect in the battery pack that also posed a fire risk.

Now, the company has asked its dealers to provide a physical fix for vehicle owners, BYD is yet to provide specific details on the nature of the fix or how long it will take to repair all affected vehicles. However, the automaker is known for its extensive after-sales service network, which should expedite the recall process for affected customers.

The SAMR statement did not specify whether any of the affected Dolphin and Yuan Plus vehicles were exported to international markets. This omission leaves some uncertainty about whether consumers outside of China could also be impacted by the recall. While BYD has recently set foot in the international market, SAMR and BYD are yet to disclose if this recall will affect the international markets too.
