AI research helps tackle the most challenging problems in big tech using Artificial Intelligence.
AI Research labs of large companies are expanding the horizons of artificial intelligence in fields such as image recognition and natural language processing. And some major AI research companies are allocating more and more capital to extend these capabilities.
For instance Role of big tech in AI research, Meta Platforms Inc., states that by midsummer its AI Research SuperCluster system will use 16,000 Nvidia Corp. Meta hosts a huge engine that claims to be the fastest of its kind in the world. As well, the DeepMind Technologies lab, owned by Google parent Alphabet Inc., has announced the development of a new language model, commenting, “The high-school reading comprehension level approaches human-rater performance."
These companies are on a variety of paths, both of which have the potential to drive tomorrow's progress in AI research, including drug discovery, new materials, climate change mitigation, and in-depth analysis of military drone footage.
And they are hardly the only ones: Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc., Oracle Corp., International Business Machines Corp., and others are also in the AI Research marathon.
Consumers and investors focused on the Role of big tech in AI research, stock market cramps may not pay attention to projects that are not directly related to their business area or quarterly results. However, R & D often produce products that exceed the lab's original goals. Xerox Holdings Corp. Parc Laboratory, for example, was a pioneer in personal computing. Researchers at Bell Labs, then part of AT & T Inc., developed transistors and prototyped early mobile phones.
Facebook parent Meta occupies the lane in AI Research dedicated to scaling data and computing power. Deep learning is a form of AI designed to mimic aspects of human neurons. It took off in 2010 when the ImageNet project proved it was possible to use two GPUs developed by Nvidia to train a large AI model to recognize labeled images, said Kyunghyun Cho, a co-founder of the startup Prescient Design and an associate professor of computer and data science at New York University.
According to Meta, AI Research SuperCluster currently has 6,080 Nvidia GPUs, which will grow to 16,000. The computing power will be used for language-processing and computer-vision research, with an eye toward creating the immersive world the company calls the metaverse, said Shubho Sengupta, a software engineer involved in the project.
Alphabet’s DeepMind, which is based in London, employs a technique called reinforcement learning. In this approach, an algorithm learns through a process of trial and error.
Last month, DeepMind announced a new AI Research called Alpha Code that competes with human software developers. In December, big tech in AI research DeepMind announced the development of a new language model aimed at reducing scope without sacrificing performance. This is in addition to DeepMind's claim that it has made breakthroughs in understanding the protein structures that are essential for drug discovery.
