With India housing the US$200 trillion tech economy, Bengaluru is leading the improvement at the forefront. Although AI in Bengaluru was a hot topic to begin with, tech leaders and big tech companies were initially focused on western countries and epicenters that could bring fruition to their work. Fortunately, times have changed and Bengaluru has become a major AI hub of India in 2021. According to a study by TIDE Framework, Bengaluru is ranked among the top five cities in the world for artificial intelligence.

India’s long stood young software population who were are English-speaking kept their views for western countries for a long time. For them, their first option would be an overseas career. However, with AI in Bengaluru spiraling like never before, these tech big heads are back home to explore the emerging opportunities. Besides, popular tech companies like Ola, Flipkart, and Byju’s are also leading the artificial intelligence revolution at the forefront. The ranking is expected to add fuel to the fire, which will eventually make Bengaluru the top AI hub of India. Based on the talent pool, investments, diversity of talent, and the evolution of the country’s digital foundations (TIDE), Bengaluru has topped the framework. The other cities dominating the list are San Francisco, New York, Boston, and Seattle. Bengaluru was also recognized as a top city on HBR’s list of AI hotspots in the developing world scoring favorably on the cost of living. In a previous analysis by Dealroom.co, Bengaluru has topped as the world’s fastest-growing mature tech exosystem in world since 2016.

The Government’s Support for Bengaluru

In the recent Bengaluru Tech Summit (BTS), the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai, has conveyed his support for the growing digitization and tech developments in the city. He remarked that the government is expecting a lot of companies to envisage the interest in most of the cutting-edge fields, high-tech fields, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, aerospace, renewable energy. Bommai added that they are willing to scale the infrastructure for the incoming companies.

AI Initiatives in Bengaluru

Besides driving AI innovation as a whole, Bengaluru is also getting a fair share of tech developments as disruption evolves. Currently, Bengaluru is using AI-based traffic signals to reduce congestion. The AI-powered camera reads the density of the traffic and changes the signal accordingly.

The Artifical Intelligence and Robotics Technologies Park (ARTPARK) set up in Bengaluru is aimed at promoting technological innovations by executing ambitious projects in various sectors. Established by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), ARTPARK functions with the support of AI Foundry in a public-private model.

Recently, a group of scientists from the Bengaluru-based Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) has developed a device that can mimic the human brain’s cognitive actions. Outperforming the conventional techniques in emulating AI, this innovation enhances the computational speed and power consumption efficiency.
