BCG Unveils Surprising Smartphone Trends Reshaping Indian Market

According to a recent survey conducted by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), almost half of Indian users tend to pick up their smartphones because of their features, often without any specific intention, in other words. The BCG report, based on data from over 1,000 users and interviews across India, shows that the average user picks up their phone 70-80 times a day. 50-55% of these issues are due to behavior rather than a specific task or need. This begs the question: what is it about this device that makes it so compelling? Is it the attention-grabbing social media announcements, the promise of entertainment, or just the convenience of a digital partner at our fingertips?

"In our research, we have seen about 50 per cent of the time consumers do not have clarity on why they pick up the phone they do it out of habit," said Kanika Sanghi, Lead - Centre for Customer Insights India.

The report also noted that about 55 percent of the time, customers pick up their phones without a clear idea, while 50 percent of the time they are clear about the task at hand in addition, 5 to 10 percent of consumers were relatively clear about the report said why they got their phones.

The report also says that the average smartphone user checks their phone between 70 and 80 times a day. Additionally, according to the report data, categories such as socializing, shopping, searching, and gaming emerged among the top five activities that consumers perform on their smartphones.

The report data comes from real clicks/swaps data collected from over 1,000 users, including extensive customer interviews across the country in India.

Additionally, about 84 percent of users check their phone within 15 minutes of waking up, the report says. The research also introduces the concept of ‘Surfaces’, which are AI-enabled lock screens that allow users to access certain features directly from their home screen without having to go to an app.
