Vespa Officina 8 Launch
Vespa’s heritage-themed variant draws inspiration from the experimental division at the historic Piaggio plant in Pontedera. It is priced at Rs 1.34 lakh (ex-showroom, Maharashtra).
Diego Graffi, Chairman and MD, Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd said, “The Officina 8 represents a significant chapter in Vespa’s journey. By way of these periodic special-edition products Vespa, keeps adding value and differentiate itself. This special-edition series pays homage to the craftsmanship and spirit of the original Officina 8 workshop while also introducing high-end merchandise in India.”
Officina 8 Features
The Officina 8 features a new matte metallic shade called Blue Officina 8. The colour is inspired by industrial tools and workshop machinery, reinforcing the theme.
Other cosmetic highlights include metallic rivets and subtle brass- and aluminium-toned accents that contrast with the matte bodywork. The scooter continues to use Vespa’s signature steel monocoque construction.
Officina 8 retains the standard Vespa powertrains. Buyers can choose between:
125cc variant
150cc variant
Accessories and Merchandise
Vespa is introducing a coordinated range of accessories and merchandise. A colour-matched helmet is included as standard equipment. An optional top box of the same matte blue shade is also available.
The brand is offering themed apparel and lifestyle merchandise such as windbreakers, hoodies, T-shirts, backpacks, and key chains. Each customer will receive a tin-packaged welcome kit containing an owner’s book. It recounts the history of the original Officina 8 workshop.
Rivals in Focus: Practicality vs Premium Styling
In the Rs 1.2-1.4 lakh price range, the Honda Activa 125 and the TVS NTorq 125 are strong contenders against the Vespa Officina 8. The Honda Activa 125 is well-known for its smooth engine, high mileage, and widespread service network, making it a pragmatic choice for a commuter. The TVS NTorq 125, on the other hand, offers a sporty element with smartphone connectivity and a peppy engine.
Whereas the Officina 8 is all about high-end design and lifestyle, the Activa and the NTorq offer a well-rounded mix of usability and technology. It offers customers a unique choice in terms of mileage and performance.
Vespa Officina’s Origin Story
The name Officina 8 references the experimental workshop set up within the Pontedera factory in 1944. The unit housed engineers and craftsmen who worked on prototypes and engineering solutions.
It was within this environment that the original Vespa was developed and patented in 1946. It also featured innovations such as a step-through steel frame and handlebar-mounted gear control. These elements went on to define the brand.
