Apple partners with OpenAI for AI Innovation and may soon be joined by Google

Apple has reportedly agreed a deal with Microsoft-backed OpenAI to include its artificial intelligence ChatGPT for iPhones in the upcoming iOS 18 version. However, the Cupertino-based tech giant has also signed an agreement with Google to offer Gemini AI as an option, Bloomberg reports.

According to the report, Apple is not interested in OpenAI as a “single source provider” for AI features on iOS. This trend has been further exacerbated by recent allegations by Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson, who claimed that OpenAI used a voice “very similar” to hers for a new voice in its new AI model.

Also, Bloomberg noted that OpenAI now has a precarious corporate structure—the company's CEO was briefly fired last year, putting its employees and Microsoft in jeopardy. These and other factors could make the Cupertino-based tech giant look for a deal with Google to replace Gemini as an alternative to ChatGPT. However, even if the two companies agree, Apple is unlikely to introduce Gemini-powered features in its iOS 18.

At its annual Worldwide Development Conference (WWDC) scheduled for June 10, the partnership with OpenAI is likely to be a highlight. Apple is reportedly adding OpenAI’s ChatGPT to upcoming operating systems for iPhones, iPads and MacBooks. The partnership will also give Apple a competitive edge over the likes of Samsung in partnering with Google to offer Gemini-powered AI features in its products.

Apple is also reportedly developing its chatbot, which is internally inspired by a massive virtual language (LLM) called “Ajax.” But Apple is reportedly skeptical about it and its ability to compete with rivals like Google and Microsoft. Partnering with other service providers like OpenAI will likely buy Apple some time to make its Artificial Intelligence model more competitive.

Conclusion: Apple’s partnership with OpenAI is an essential step towards a future where artificial intelligence is more embedded in everyday technology. This collaboration is expected to bring more brilliant, more flexible products to Apple’s ecosystem and enhance the user experience across all of its devices.
