AMD to invest US$400 million in India over the next five years to build a new India campus in Bangalore
AMD to Invest US$400 Million: U.S. chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced its plan to invest approximately US$400 million in India over the next five years to expand research, development, and engineering Operations here. The company aims to build its largest design center in Bengaluru, the country’s tech hub.
AMD’s Chief Technology Officer, Mark Papermaster, confirmed the development at the annual semiconductor conference on July 28 in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Indian government has been aggressively seeking investment in the country’s chip sector to position itself as a hub for chipmaking. AMD said it would open the design center in Bengaluru by the end of the year and create 3,000 new engineering roles within five years. "Our India teams will continue to play a pivotal role in delivering the high-performance and adaptive solutions that support AMD customers worldwide," Papermaster said.
The new 500,000-sq-ft campus will be the latest addition to AMD’s footprint in Bengaluru, which is expected to be operational by the end of this year and will create 3,000 new engineering roles within five years. It will increase the company’s office count in the country to 10 locations. AMD already has over 6,500 employees in India.
"We have a diversified portfolio across CPU Server Data Centers, GPU gaming graphics, PC, adaptive computing, and embedded devices. This investment will allow us to expand our portfolio and capabilities as we broadly bring AI processing capabilities across AMD products. Our India team will be pivotal in advancing AI and machine learning in hardware and software capabilities," Papermaster said.
AMD’s chips, used in various devices from personal computers to data centers, compete with market leader Nvidia. In addition to its existing chip portfolio, AMD is also working on an artificial intelligence chip.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, added that this will also provide tremendous opportunities for India's large pool of highly skilled semiconductor engineers and researchers. AMD has been an active part of the semiconductor ecosystem in India since 2001, when the company’s first site was established in New Delhi.
Apart from AMD’s investment, other notable investments in India’s chip sector include Applied Materials’ multi-year US$400 million plan to set up an engineering center and Micron’s US$825 million investment in a semiconductor testing and packaging unit in Gujarat.
