AI

With the continuous evolution of Artificial Intelligence, the world is being benefited to the utmost level, as the applications of AI are unremitting. This technology can be operated in any sector of industry, including the healthcare industry.

Artificial Intelligence is transmuting the system and methods of the healthcare industries. AI and healthcare were found together over half a century.

Based on the usage of AI in healthcare, a global guide has been introduced in South Korea. The guide is labeled as "Using AI to Support Healthcare Decisions: A Guide for Society". Three organizations namely the Korea Policy Center, the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Institute, and the UK-based science communication non-profit Sense about Science collaborated to design the guide.

It was introduced on 15th August during the 2021 Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining Conference.

About the Guide

The global guide provides three guiding principles and questions to assess a technology's quality for patients, policymakers, journalists, clinicians, and decision-makers. The guide incorporates an understanding of AI’s base data, AI’s prediction about patients and diseases, and how much to depend on Artificial Intelligence recommendations.

It is the key guideline that was designed for the responsible use of AI tools and technologies and to promote clarity and high standards for technological applications in the healthcare sector. While developing the guide, the collaborators discussed and took advice from various specialists from the Science and Technology Policy Institute, KAIST Graduate School of AI, Asan Medical Centre, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, and various AI companies.

To Bring Confidence Among People Regarding AI Usage

Undoubtedly AI has shown its efficiency over the years but still, there are certain confusions like data privacy and incorrect diagnoses which lead people to fear its usage. The author of the guide said, rather than avoiding such advanced tools, it is better to discuss the standards that AI can meet.

The guide is focused to bring confidence among the people to trust the technologies which enhance medical treatment and shun those that cause harm. It aims to modify the conversation that is going on around Artificial Intelligence.

As AI is rapidly developing and the number of use cases is rising among healthcare providers, the guide highlights the eminence of asking questions about AI implementations in healthcare. According to the author of the guide, asking questions will ensure the accountable use of Artificial Intelligence. Also, applying these questions will help people to confirm that AI tools used in healthcare are making efficient use of data and knowledge accessible with negligible error, across different countries and populations, without escalating inequalities that are already high.

Along with the benefits provided by AI in healthcare, there are some vital challenges to its adoption in healthcare, especially around fairness and prejudice.

The author of the guide concentrated on the responsibility and accountability of Artificial Intelligence implementations in the healthcare sector to make all data well illustrated, of good quality. The technology will gradually innovate to better assist the people, especially people’s constant demands for safety, security, and accuracy in healthcare services. This global guide will help both developers and people’s understanding of the relevant technology applications.

The guide concludes “as more people ask the questions in this guide, more people in authority will expect to be asked. In this way, a virtuous circle of responsible discussion can be created, and ultimately, higher standards in using Artificial Intelligence to guide healthcare decisions.
